By derickjones 01/09/2017 Albuquerque News If you went to high school in Albuquerque, then you already know what I'm about to tell you. This time with our #APS coverage, we're looking at five rivalry high schools and our pick for winner when it comes down to it all. What are we looking for? We're factoring in street cred, celebrity alums and general badassery. And historical factors, just for good measure. 1. Cibola Cougars vs Volcano Vista Hawks Cibola HS class of 2017. Cool group to work with. Thanks coach Rod for the loyalty #sportsphotography #sportsportraits #mojisports #hsbasketball #cibolacougars #cougarsbasketball A photo posted by Anthony Griego Jr (@hotrodjr) on Dec 13, 2016 at 11:31am PST Presented by Gene Bermudez Insurance Agency Gene Bermudez Insurance Agency Gene Bermudez Insurance Agency 500 San Mateo Blvd NE Albuquerque, NM 87108 (505) 268-7777 Huge congratulations to our Volleyball team for defeating Cleveland and becoming TWO TIMES DISTRICT CHAMPS #2peat #HAWKNATION?????????? A photo posted by Volcano Vista High School (@vvhs_hawks) on Nov 2, 2016 at 4:54pm PDT Our first matchup is Cibola vs Volcano Vista. Some people disagree with this rivalry, but it really just depends on what year you attended. Cibola High School opened in 1976 but due to rapid population growth in the area in the mid-2000s, Volcano Vista opened nearby. Ever since then they've been at war. Is this the root of their current rivalry?Who would win in the end? We vote Cibola. 2. Sandia Matadors vs La Cueva Bears So much love ?? #mannequinchallenge A video posted by Hailey (@hizzleee) on Nov 10, 2016 at 7:27pm PST #BearsVolleyball earns the 5 set victory over Sandia HS - #lacueva #bears #volleyball #highschool #athletics #athletes #studentathletes #sports #blackandwhitephotography #nikon #jubilation #albuquerquephotographer #dig #kill #rally A photo posted by Sean Anthony (@seananthonyphoto) on Oct 4, 2016 at 9:03pm PDT Sandia opened in 1958 (and their original mascot was Satan!), but just like Cibola, hit a point where there were just too many kids. In the late 1970s, the school reached a record student population for the state of New Mexico. This prompted the construction of La Cueva High School in the early 1980s.But if it came down to a battle? La Cueva would win hands down. Side note — La Cueva also has a bit of rivalry with one of our next matchup schools, Eldorado. According to our sources, even kids in elementary schools in La Cueva's district lay down the smack when they see others in EHS apparel — even adults. Apparently, they know where they're going. 3. Manzano Monarchs vs Eldorado Eagles A late congrats to @hollyholm for winning the ufc champ???????? Home of the Monarchs ?? #manzanohighschool #abq #igersabq #newmexico #albuquerque #hollyholm A photo posted by Manzano Monarchs (@manzanomonarch) on Dec 3, 2015 at 11:43pm PST #EldoradoEagles game ended in the third quarter; when the score reached 52-0 and the refs called the game. #highschoolfootball #whosereadyforsomefootball #fridaynightlights #hometeam A video posted by Vincent Matthew Xavier Thom? (@mindspaceltd) on Aug 27, 2015 at 11:08pm PDT Manzano hates Eldorado. Ask anyone. Maybe it's just because of Manzano's pride. But they should be proud — especially since they can claim UFC champ Holly Holm. They also can claim Billy Smith, Former MLB player for the California Angels, Baltimore Orioles, and San Francisco Giants.Eldorado boasts a lot of cool alumni including Olympic gold medalist Trent Dimas, Super Bowl champion Vince Warren and a number of other professional football, basketball and baseball players. Who gets the KO? Sorry Eldorado, but Manzano reigns supreme. 4. Highland Hornets vs Albuquerque Bulldogs When your first music video goes viral in 24 hours and you ain't even know bout it???? shout to EVERYONE that contributed especially @highlandhornets much love! Woke EP available now???? Oh yeah, and season 3 of the acclaimed AMC series Breaking Bad was filmed inside the Highland gymnasium. Tons of other movies have been shot at the school (too many to name, really). But in 2015, AHS was named the fifth best high school in the state of New Mexico by U.S. News & World Report. Who wins this battle? There's no way Albuquerque stood a chance. Go Hornets. 5. Rio Grande Ravens vs Atrisco Heritage Academy Jaguars #sports #football #touchdown #highschool #fridaynightlights #running #nikond4 #snapseed #gallupnm #riogranderavens #miyamura #365project #patriots #miyamurapatriots #gallupindependent A photo posted by Out Of My Cell (@jeffjonesimages) on Sep 3, 2016 at 7:27am PDT Powder puff Class 2016!!!!! ???? (@_its_like_paradise_) on Apr 9, 2016 at 8:55am PDT The Rio Grande Ravens have been around since 1959 and have extremely talented baseball and wrestling teams. The wrestlers have placed second in state the past two years. The baseball team, coached by former professional baseball player Orlando Griego, finished with a rank of 11th in state. They are known to have strong rivalries with Atrisco Heritage Academy and Valley High School.Atrisco has had two movies filmed there: Lemonade Mouth in 2011 and The Avengers in 2012 (even though the school was only featured for 30 seconds in the trailer). But still. Was your high school in a movie? Yeah. I didn't think so.Who wins this toss up? We're calling it a tie. But know knows, Valley could lay down the heat on both of them.
