14 Reasons Salt Lake City Is The Best City In The Universe

Situated between two gorgeous mountain ranges and the largest land trapped body of salt water, Salt Lake City is where it's at.

1. Twilight Concert Series at Pioneer Park

Salt Lake City summers are brimming with outdoor concerts. But the ones held every Thursday night at Pioneer Park are not only super cheap, just $5, but also the place to be. The park is lined with food trucks and other unique vendors and with headliners like Ludacris, MGMT, The Flaming Lips, and Kid Cudi it doesn't get much better than that.

2. Mounds Of Fresh White Powder

SLC claims "the best snow on Earth" and the slopes that host it are just a quick drive or shuttle ride from both work and home. And ski season lasts longer than expected almost every year.

3. Number One In The Nation For Literacy

Yep, that's right. We know how to read. And we know how to teach 'em how to read.

4. Temple Square

Contrary to popular belief, you don't have to be Mormon, or even religious, to enjoy Temple Square. It's chalk full of history and beauty. There is much to do and see. And there are always shows, musical performances, and other free events to attend.

5. Liberty Park

There is never a dull moment at Liberty Park. It's where one and all are welcome to run, walk, skate, bike, play tennis, sand volleyball, basketball, horseshoes, ride paddle boats in the duck pond, visit the Aviary, ride the ferris wheel, enjoy sporadic musical and larper performances, buy your very own tie-dye shirt, and even play hacky sack.

6. Park City

Sure it's a different city, but it's only 30 minutes away and it's an awesome place to spend a day. Plus, there's Sundance Film Festival, which spills over into theaters and parties in SLC.

7. We Have Our Very Own Holy War

The University of Utah Utes and the Brigham Young University Cougars. In this town you either bleed red or you bleed blue and should really be living in Happy Valley. There is no way around it. And even for those of us who aren't really into college football, it's fun. And now that the Utes are in the PAC 12 it's a million times more fun to bleed red.

8. It's Where Businesses Go To Blow Up

For three years in a row Forbes Magazine has named Utah #1 for business. Big companies like Adobe, eBay, Goldman Sachs, Overstock.com and the new NSA Data Center are popping up everywhere and thriving. Because of this Salt Lake City has also been ranked the #1 Most Livable Future State by MSN Money. You can have a great future here.

9. It's Nearly Impossible To Get Lost in SLC

The Mormon Pioneers were visionaries when it came to city planning. The grid system streets in SLC make finding an address as easy as counting to 10 and knowing North, South, East and West. And the mountains make that easier to remember too - the big mountain range is to the East and the small mountain range is to the West.

10. Home Of The World's First KFC

Who doesn't love the Colonel's chicken? And at the World's First KFC, located in SLC, you can eat it all buffet style.

11. Hiking And Everything Else Outdoors

Utah is nature's playground and SLC is right in the middle of it all. There are numerous hiking trails, lakes, canyons, rivers, and all other natural wonders just a short drive or even a walk from your front door. And if the mountains aren't enough for you there are the arches, red rock, and the salt flats scattered around the state. It never gets boring.

12. Real Salt Lake

I had never been a fan of soccer or watched a match in my life -- isn't soccer for South America? -- so when Real Salt Lake was announced I was skeptical, as was everyone else it seemed. But, they just keep winning championships and the matches are a blast to attend. How could you not be a proud fan?

13. It's The Friendliest State In The Nation

How could it not be the best place to be when strangers always smile and greet you and are happy to help? And then your neighbor shovels your sidewalk for you before you get up and drops by with warm cookies right out of the oven for no reason. Every day is a great day in Salt Lake City.

14. Trax

The first stage of SLC's light rail train, Trax, was completed in 1999, just in time for the Olympics. It now runs all over the valley, including to the airport (finally) and even has frontrunner trains that take you all the way up to Layton and all the way down to Provo. And with many many more routes and stops in the works there really isn't anywhere you can't go without driving a car.
