10 Most Iconic New Mexico Companies

By AmyMurphy 03/04/2014

Albuquerque News

New Mexico is home to tons of awesome companies, but only a few can be considered iconic. Cheers to these ten businesses that make the land of entrapment a little more enchanting.

1. Eclipse Aerospace

A manufacturer of private jets and home to the Eclipse 550, the most efficient twin-engine jet on the planet, the company was originally known as Eclipse Aviation.

2. Creamland Dairies

Formed in 1937 by a group of local dairy farmers, New Mexico hasn't been the same since Creamland opened its doors, and we're better off for it. Not only do the products range from cottage cheese to ice cream, it's a well known fact that nothing makes a party like a big bowl of Fiesta Dip. Plus, who doesn't love Airabelle, the giant Creamland cow balloon?

3. Blakes Lotaburger

Speedy, cheesy, and full of red or green chile, nothing beats a Blake’s Breakfast Burrito when you're on the go. Or anytime really. In addition to awesome award-winning burritos, Blake's has been in business making burgers since 1952 and has over 70 locations.

4. Sandia National Laboratory

Okay, okay, so this isn't technically a company per say, but Sandia Labs is pretty kick ass. The labs employ many a New Mexican and are known for developing cool things like the accelerator pictured above.

5. Hatch Green Chile

The Village of Hatch is known as the Chile Capitol of the World, not too surprising considering chiles have been growing in New Mexico for over 400 years. That's right, 400 years. Can we all have a moment of silence in respect of green chile? Now let's dig in.

6. New Mexico Rail Runner

Although it hasn't been around for long, the Rail Runner is fast becoming an iconic part of New Mexico with its roadrunner paint job. Click here for a chance to name the Rail Runner's mascot.

7. Dions

Dion's is the perfect local hang out with its friendly atmosphere, delicious pizza, and sublime subs, not to mention the homemade ranch. The pizza joint is so popular that elementary school children can even take a tour of the restaurant.

8. Santa Fe Natural Tobacco Company

Known for its Natural American Spirit cigarettes, the Santa Fe Tobacco Company has been in business for over thirty years and uses organic tobacco.

9. Albuquerque Tortilla Company

Owned by the Martinez family since 1987, the Albuquerque Tortilla Company was sold in 2011. Luckily, the change in ownership hasn't changed the quality as the original recipe is still used for these tasty, soft, tortillas.

10.  Allsup's Convenience Store

Ever had an Allsup's burrito? If not, you're missing out. Lonnie and Barbara Allsup founded the chain in 1964 and still operate the more than 300 stores throughout New Mexico.
