10 Chicago Burrito Joints That are Better Than Chipotle By PatrickDowell 06/19/2015 Chicago News Chipotle may be delicious, but it's burritos taste bland when compared to these amazing restaurants in Chicago. 10.) El Taco Veloz (1745 W. Chicago Ave.) Juicy, tender, absolutely delicious. El Taco Veloz is a charming restaurant that offers some truly amazing burritos. While Chipotle might have some healthier options, I sincerely believe that most Chicagoans scoff at the idea of health food. And it's not like El Taco Veloz is some disgusting dive; it's actually a very well-loved neighborhood restaurant. 9.) Don Pepe (3616 W. 26th St.) Don Pepe is a good spot to visit after a long night. This is definitely not the type of place you go to for lunch or a sexy date. Then again, neither is Chipotle. On top of the burritos, try some mouth-watering torts and tacos and soak up your shame before the night is over. 8.) Las Asadas (2045 N. Western Ave.) Although Las Asadas is a chain with several locations in and throughout Chicago it deserves a place on this list. Chipotle is basically Las Asadas on steroids when it comes to the sheer size of the business. Yet, Las Asadas has some epically tasty burritos with some fresh and delicious ingredients that put Chipotle to shame. 7.) Taqueria El Asadero (2213 N. Montrose Ave.) I think Chipotle's guacamole is akin to Oscar The Grouch's vomit. Basically, if you can't do guacamole, you can't do a truly great burrito. Taquiera El Asadero makes GREAT guacamole and therefore has some amazing burritos. El Asadero is like Carbon in that they have some amazing steak, but you'd be doing yourself zero favors if you didn't ask to live in their guacamole buckets. 6.) Pueblo Nuevo (4342 N. Central Ave.) One of the other things I don't like about Chipotle is how they line you up like a farm animal and shove food in your face. It doesn't take that much to provide a fun dining experience. One of the better places to grab a burrito with a side of terrific customer service is Pueblo Nuevo on Central. The owner of this restaurant remembers people and talks to them about just about anything (weather, life, burritos) while dishing up fat, loaded burritos. Great spot to chill and have a nice lunch. 5.) Taqueria Traspasada (811 N Ashland Ave.) Taquiera Traspassada is another small joint and the reason I keep choosing them is to subtly remind people that sometimes the best things come in small packages. Aside from L'Patron, Taquiera Traspassada has the best al pastor burrito in town. It's got a nice spot on Ashland and has a pleasant atmosphere. 4.) La Pasadita (1140 N. Ashland Ave.) La Pasadita is family owned and operated and has been since 1976. There are a few different locations now, but the original is one of the best Mexican joints in the whole city. Aside from the burritos, try the tacos which some claim are the best in the whole city...which is saying something. 3.) Carbon Live Fire Mexican Grill (300 W 26th St.) Carbon is home to the best steak burrito in Chicago. They use really fresh steak as a key ingredient, far more than a number of restaurants in the city. Chipotle may have that farm-raised stuff, but Carbon gives you the realest of deals. 2.) Irazu (1865 N. Milwaukee Ave.) Irazu's bread and butter is their amazing empanadas but their burrito is a heavyweight in terms of the Chicago scene. Irazu is just off the Western Blue Line stop and is a great date spot. It's BYOB, so while you'll provide the "B" for Booze, let Irazu provide the "B" for Burritos. 1.) L'Patron (2815 W. Diversey Ave.) A friend asked me if there was a way I could think outside the box and maybe put some other joint in the #1 spot. I thought about it...briefly. But, I couldn't do it. Call me a follower, I guess. L'Patron is a small restaurant in Logan Square right near where Diversey and California intersect. This small stand is packed to the gills CONSTANTLY. L'Patron has fresh ingredients and wraps up a perfect burrito. If someone tries to tell you that Chipotle is better, they have never eaten a burrito and think a burrito is an automatic vacuum cleaner.
